Well, the ASGC Symposium at Petit Jean Mountain went very well, along with the new NASA EPSCoR Conference held on Sautrday morning. Again, as was the case last year, there were many comments on the venue, the UA System Winthrop Rockefeller Institute. Also, there were man comments on the new facilities since last year. The President’s Lodge area was especially attractive, with an excellent grand hall area where the committee at one point met, but that individuals couls simply go over and sit down. Dish Network HD TV was avialable along with microwave and refridge in each room, and a full kitchen was located in the great hall area.
We had an excellent series of talks and presentations in chemistry, physics, engineering, and bio-life sciences, along with a smattering of psychology, math, and other fields. Dr. Chris McKay gave an outstanding keynote address! And, we also had a very good poster session, with a large number of student presenters. I hope everyone presenting received an ASGC T-Shirt!!!
The NASA EPSCoR meeting had a smaller audience, with only one session, but also had some serious presentations over the currently funded work of Dr. Haydar Al-Shukri, Co-PI Dr. Bob Dunn, and team, as well as brief presentations from each of the RID award teams and the two proposed 2008 research teams (Anderson and Kennefick). Finally, Drs. Hudson (ASGC Director), Wefel (LaSpace Driector), and Teague (NASA Space Grant Fellow for EPSCoR) presented some facts and figures on NASA EPSCoR, and a sort of how to for investigators, in particular the RID team leaders. RID teams are expected to submit a NASA EPSCoR research award proposal for the 20009 competition!
Overall, a great meeting! Thanks to Coordinators Sue Hawkins and Laura Holland for doing the legwork and enabling a fantastic meeting, as well as to all that attended!
